Be sure to call the airline 24 to 72 hours prior to your departure date to re-confirm your flights (or re-confirm online). If your outbound flight is an early morning flight (for example, 6:00 AM,), you may even want to call the airline again sometime after 11:00 PM the night prior to your departure, just to make sure no last minute cancellations due to weather or mechanical problems have occurred. Usually aircraft that will be departing in the early morning hours will actually arrive the night prior.

While you are on the phone (or website) re-confirming your flight, check on weight and size restrictions. If you exceed the size or weight limit, you will incur extra charges. To avoid last minute surprises at the airport, also confirm the carrier’s charges for checked luggage. On domestic flights most airlines are now charging for the first piece of checked luggage as well as the second. If there is a charge, paying it online in advance, rather than at the airport, could save you about $5 per person.

If you are flying out of the Richmond airport, remember to take the special discount coupon for parking at Park’N Go which is compliments of Cruise Escapes.

For domestic flights arrive at the airport at least 2 hours prior to your departure time. For international flights, arrive at the airport at least 3 hours prior to your scheduled departure time.

Be sure to have your photo ID readily accessible when you check-in. For domestic flights you may use your driver’s license. For international flights you will need a passport. Children under the age of 18 who are NOT traveling with both of their natural parents must have a notarized letter signed by the absent parent(s). If the child is adopted, adoption papers are required.

Pack lightly, without clutter, to facilitate easier screening.

All liquids or creams in your carry-on luggage must be in travel-size containers (3 ounces or less). These travel- size containers must be placed in ONE, QUART-SIZE, CLEAR PLASTIC; ZIP-TOP BAG. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, mouth wash, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.

Exceptions: Baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling; prescripition medicine with a name that matches the passenger’s ticket; and insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines, which all must be presented for inspection at the check-point.

After clearing security, travelers can now bring beverages and other items purchased in the secure boarding area onboard aircraft.

Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off because you will have to remove your shoes when going through security. Avoid large pieces of jewelry and large metal belt buckles.

Be sure your carry-on luggage is small enough to fit easily under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. Also, be sure it is light enough that you won’t have trouble carrying it from one gate to another.
